Barry Willer, PhD
Dr. Willer is a Professsor in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB). He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at SUNYAB.
His research over the past thirty years has focused on brain injury with two major interest areas. He has a National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) grant to study emotion recognition impairment and treatment in those with traumatic brain injury (TBI). He has funding from multiple foundations (including the National Football Leagues Charities) to study concussion, with special attention to return to play evaluation and treatment of post concussion syndrome.
Dr. Willer has participated on scientific peer review committees for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and NIDRR. He is the author of the “Whatever it Takes” model for rehabilitation. He also authored the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ), which has been used widely as a measure of participation for programs that serve those with TBI and other impairments. The CIQ has been translated into fourteen different languages and has been cited more than 400 times in the literature.
He has presented at numerous national and international meetings, and has published twenty book chapters on brain injury, and over one hundred journal articles. He also published one book about evaluation of mental health programs and a second book about the deinstitutionalization of services for those with developmental disabilities.
