Cognitive Rehabilitation Workshop for Professionals

This one day interactive workshop is suitable for professionals working with adults who have cognitive problems following brain injury.

The course focuses on practical activities that can be used in the rehabilitation of attention, visual processing, information processing, memory and executive functions.

Specific Aims

  1. To teach therapists how to design, develop & implement a comprehensive cognitive rehabilitation program,
  2. To teach therapists about the 4 approaches to ensure a synergistic effect within their cognitive rehabilitation programs,
  3. To enable therapists to practice formulating clinical reasoning for designing cognitive rehabilitation programs

 

Workshop Program

OVERVIEW/EDUCATION 9.30am
Overview of course. The 4 approaches to practical rehabilitation. The need for education and a recommended basic curriculum. Understanding how to teach and tips for doing this. Example of education sheet about attention. Illustrative case study. Group work on how to provide an education program using a case study. Feedback and summary of what we did with this case study.

BREAK 10.30am

PROCESS TRAINING 11.00am
What is process training? The process training cycle. Does process training work? How does process training work and the link with self efficacy. Incorporating awareness training into process training. How to design tasks for process training. Grading activities. Group work on designing a process training task for a case study. Feedback.

LUNCH 12.00pm

STRATEGY TRAINING 1.30pm
The use of strategy training. Difficulties with strategy training. Benefits of strategy training. Teaching strategies through using process training and functional activities training. Group work on teaching strategies via process training using a case study. Feedback.

BREAK 2.30pm

FUNCTIONAL ACTIVITIES TRAINING 3.00pm The end of the rainbow. Used as a medium for training specific cognitive skills. Choosing activities to use. 7 steps to using functional activities training. Summary of how these steps were used with a case study.

CONCLUSION
Setting these approaches into the context of holistic treatment programs.

Faculty

Kit Malia BED, MPhil, CPCRT

 

Mr Kit Malia BED, MPhil, CPCRT, is the only Certificated Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapist in the UK (via the Society for Cognitive Rehabilitation, USA), with a research degree in Neuropsychology. He initially trained as a teacher for people with learning disabilities and, following 6 years of teaching, spent over two decades working as a cognitive rehabilitation therapist with adults who have acquired neurological injuries, at one of the largest brain injury rehabilitation units in the UK: The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. His current role is Project Officer for the mild Traumatic Brain Injury Programme at Headley Court where he is responsible for managing the delivery, by the multi-disciplinary team, of the specialised programme he designed and produced. He has published scientific papers on cognitive and psychosocial rehabilitation, and clinical standards in brain injury rehabilitation. He is the primary author of Brainwave-R (an extensive collection of cognitive strategies and techniques for brain injury rehabilitation). He has also co-authored The Brain Injury Workbook with Dr Trevor Powell. Mr Malia has lectured at various conferences in Canada, USA, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia, New Zealand and the UK. He is the invited International Fellow in Cognitive Rehabilitation for the Institute for Complex Neurodisability. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Society for Cognitive Rehabilitation, USA, and is the chairperson of the International Division for the SCR.

 

 

Anne Brannagan OBE, DIPCOT, MSc

 

Ms Anne Brannagan OBE, DIPCOT, MSc, qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1988 from the London school. She did a two year orthopaedic rotation before specialising in Neurorehabilitation at the Defence Services Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court. She gained a research master's degree with distinction from Kings College in 1993. Ms Brannagan is particularly interested in the cognitive and executive sequelae of acquired brain injury. She runs workshops with Kit Malia, training both professionals working in the field and carers of brain injured individuals around the country. In addition, she has lectured on cognition at conferences in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Slovenia and the USA. She is currently the membership chair of the Society for Cognitive Rehabilitation and co-organised a conference on cognitive rehabilitation in Birmingham in 1999. She is an active member of the College of Occupational Therapy Specialist Section Neurological Practice and held the position of Chair from September 2003-2006. She currently sits on the COT Specialist Section Neurological Practice Brain Injury Forum subgroup, writing clinical guidelines for patients with ABI. Ms Brannagan has developed a number of rehabilitation activities, including a practical approach to the assessment of executive problems (The Brannagan Executive Functions Assessment) following brain injury and cognitive/psychosocial groups. Her current role is Complex Trauma Manager at Headley Court where she is responsible for managing the multi-disciplinary team. She was awarded the OBE in January 2010 for services provided to rehabilitation.
